A guided gouache workshop from technique to finished witchy scene on a Pantone postcard!

📍 Reservoir, Vic, Australia 🗓️ Days vary 🕰️ 2hr 🎟️ Couples & Groups discounts available

Step into a world of magic in this immersive gouache painting workshop designed to combine technical skill with visual storytelling.

In this beginner-friendly yet creatively rich class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of gouache while creating a finished artwork of a witch's tools on a Pantone postcard colour of your choice! The workshop balances technique and narrative, helping you explore how mood, symbolism, and composition work together to create meaningful imagery.

You’ll begin by learning how gouache behaves as a medium and how it differs from watercolour and acrylic. Through guided warm-up exercises, you’ll experiment with paint-to-water ratios, layering techniques, and achieving smooth, matte coverage. You’ll practise building flat base layers, controlling edges, and creating simple forms before exploring how to paint atmospheric backgrounds. You'll paint floral imagery in order to prepare yourself for the final painting.

As the class progresses, we’ll explore how even a simple still life can feel narrative-driven. Through guided discussion, you’ll learn how colour, contrast, and symbolic objects create atmosphere and emotion. Working from a shared composition, you’ll make personal choices in palette and detail while considering balance, negative space, and focal points before sketching your final cauldron scene.

The majority of the session is dedicated to building your major painting. You’ll learn how to block in shapes confidently, create depth and atmosphere, and gradually introduce symbolic details that strengthen your visual story. Individual feedback is provided throughout to help refine your technique and support your creative direction.

In the final stages, you’ll focus on contrast, edge refinement, and strategic highlights to bring your painting to life. The workshop concludes with a reflective discussion on storytelling through art and practical tips for continuing your gouache practice at home.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with a completed or near-completed Pantone postcard painting, a stronger understanding of gouache techniques, and greater confidence in combining technical skill with imaginative storytelling.
