Step into the festive and enchanting world of watercolour and learn how to paint your own Christmas-inspired artwork in this beginner-friendly workshop. In this three-hour class, you’ll be guided through a series of classic Christmas studies, exploring how watercolour can be used to create rich evergreen foliage, warm gingerbread tones, vibrant festive colours, and charming seasonal details. Whether you’ve never picked up a brush before or want to build your confidence with watercolour, this workshop will give you the skills to create your own beautiful, handmade Christmas card or artwork. You’ll begin with guided exercises exploring:
Creating transparent layers of colour
Building light and shadow with watercolour
Creating soft edges and atmospheric effects
Using wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques
Creating the illusion of glowing light
Once you feel comfortable with the techniques, you’ll move into four Christmas-inspired studies. You’ll learn how to:
Paint a charming gingerbread man using warm brown washes, soft shadows, and decorative icing details.
Create a classic Christmas tree using layered greens, expressive brushstrokes, and natural texture.
Paint a colourful Christmas bauble, exploring rounded shapes, shading, highlights, and festive patterns.
Paint holly leaves and bright red berries, practising leaf shapes, colour mixing, layering, and fine details.
In the final portion of the class, you’ll put your new skills to the test with a self-led Christmas painting that can either be a card or artwork. Using the techniques and elements you’ve learned throughout the workshop, you’ll create your own festive Christmas card/artwork — whether that’s a charming gingerbread scene, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, a colourful bauble design, or a festive arrangement of holly and berries. You’ll have the freedom to combine the elements however you like and add your own Christmas-inspired details, making your final artwork uniquely yours.
