"The Odditorium" (Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival 2015), Group exhibit, Port Melbourne, Vic, 2015
This exhibition takes reference from the nature and intent of historical sideshow exhibits and carnival posters. Designed to engage the curiosity and fear of the viewer, sideshows often exploited social prejudices and misunderstandings about people who were physically different and marginalized. Often placed within cages or seen behind barriers, the performers were separated from the viewer, therefore heightening the sense of curiosity and fear.
We celebrate terms like multiculturalism, inclusivity and understanding yet many facets through sensationalized media or used as political fodder.
The problem exists; our society is so defined by its own ideals of normality and often sees anything different as abnormal, therefore it often places what is not understood behind barriers. The focus of this exhibition raises questions about these issues and attempts to highlight the stories and challenges faced by those who are marginalized.
My role in this group exhibit included designing one of the carnival posters, which was then painted directly onto the wall.
